Reversing is one of the highest-risk moments in workplace transport: HSE reports that almost a quarter of all deaths involving vehicles at work happen while vehicles are reversing. A trained banksman, using clear, agreed signals from a safe position, is one of the key controls HSE guidance HSG136 (A guide to workplace transport safety) describes.
Training is also how you show competence. If something goes wrong, the first questions will be whether the person guiding the vehicle was trained, and whether the signals and positions they used followed recognised guidance.
