Every sports ground and large venue needs stewards, supervisors and safety officers who can prove they are competent. The Green Guide (the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds) and your local Safety Advisory Group will expect it, and your safety certificate may depend on it. Here is how the three levels fit together.
| Level | Who it is for | What it proves | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 2 spectator safety | Every steward | Can carry out stewarding duties safely: briefings, crowd movement, searching, emergencies, customer care | £295 + VAT per learner |
| Level 3 spectator safety supervision | Supervisors and team leaders | Can lead a team of stewards, brief them, monitor and respond to incidents | £695 + VAT per learner |
| Level 4 diploma in spectator safety management | Safety officers and deputies | Can plan, manage and review spectator safety for the whole ground or event | £2,450 + VAT per learner |
The Green Guide expects stewards to hold the Level 2 qualification, or to be working towards it within twelve months of starting. It is the foundation for everyone in a high-vis bib: pre-event checks, safe crowd movement, dealing with incidents and emergencies, and communicating with spectators.
How we deliver it: short training sessions before your home fixtures, then your assessor observes each learner at a minimum of two live events. The portfolio is supported remotely, so nobody loses a working day. Level 2 spectator safety course
For the people stewards look to on the day. Level 3 covers briefing and deploying a team, monitoring crowd conditions, managing incidents as they develop and supporting the safety officer.
How we deliver it: assessed at your own fixtures around the supervisor's normal duties, with two live-event observations included. Level 3 spectator safety supervision
The management qualification for whoever holds responsibility for spectator safety at the ground or event: planning, risk assessment, contingency planning, working with the Safety Advisory Group and reviewing performance.
How we deliver it: blended learning with up to two site visits included. Our assessor and internal quality assurer for Level 4 holds the Level 4 diploma himself. Level 4 diploma
We assess at live fixtures, at football, cricket, rugby and racing venues, rather than taking stewards off site. That means real evidence, less disruption to your matchday team and a qualified workforce faster. Our assessors include former stewards and supervisors who know match day from the pitch side up.
Send us your steward, supervisor and safety officer numbers and your fixture list. We will map who needs which level and build a plan around your season.
